Wigald, the warm-hearted Monster

Hey wait, no need to panic! He is much calmer than he looks, really! And his belly is a hot-water bottle. I sewed him together for my wife as a christmas present, so don‘t be fooled by his slightly prominent teeth, he‘s harmless… ¬ Comments

CSS Tooltips for everybody!
added on Friday, Nov 10, 2006 10:22 am
TooltipsThis is an example of a tooltip are little boxes of text that pop up when you hover over a link. They can rather easily be done with pure CSS. Today I had to do it with inline links that spit out tooltips with further info. I took me several hours of fun, searching the net, gathering info on bugs and inconsistent implementation of CSS, to find a solution that reliably works on Mac OS and Windows in Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari. I don‘t claim to be an CSS expert, but let me share…

Amora
added on Sunday, Aug 06, 2006 18:38 pm

Spacey, science-fictionesque, and -- as always in David Lanham's works -- cute and quirky: The new full-desktop-make-over Amora from the Iconfactory. It's a complete system replacement icon set (also with many application icons) and a Shapeshifter Theme.
Although this time the icons are not so usable and suited for every-day-working conditions as in Lanham's last hit Agua, the level of clever detail is once again astonishing. Digging through the 129 reveals true gems in pixel art. Some pieces are a little too "loud" in my book for using it full-time. But I found several beauties to replace app icons and the like, that will surely brighten up my days in the next week.
The same holds true for the Amora theme. Although I'm not sure yet if I can stand it for working-mode, it is really well thought-out, beautiful and full of great details. I expecially LOVE the progress indicator and the DVD controller. Amazing.

Since I began browsing the web in 1996 this has been the place to go for gorgeous, witty and free icons: The Iconfactory. The two highlights coming with the rehaul are:
- The sweet pixel-animations that lead up to the launch, full of intelligent and loony detail. Kick back and enjoy !
- Amora iconset and theme. This one is worth an extra post.
The Revenge of the Plasmodian Empire!
added on Friday, Jul 21, 2006 8:22 am
Seems the malaria phatogene is more stubborn than I thought. The fever came back, I had to go back to the hospital and spent another few days there. It turned out that I had the same Malaria Tropica again! And the explanation of the doctors was not (as any half-thinking bystander would guess) that the remedy did not fully complete its work in the first case. No, the reason, why I had to go through another saturday night fever was: I managed to get myself stinged by anopheles mosquitos twice, get (at least) two plasmodians of different stems into my liver cells and the second broke out two weeks later than the first. Considering that we spent two days in Malaria-prone areas, getting infected with Malaria twice is just B-A-D luck.
I hope this whole stupid fever-hospital-white-coat-intermezzo is now over and we can get back to bizznezz here. ¬ Comments
RFNP
added on Thursday, Jun 29, 2006 21:29 pm
Welcome back. Here are my RFNP (Reasons For Not Posting, can somebody come up with a handy word for this?) for the last three-and-a-half weeks:
- The first two weeks we had a fancy holiday, going to Kenya (east africa). The biggest skies I ever saw, landscapes that knock you out of your safari pants, driving round wild animals, white sandy beaches, meeting giraffes up close (and their 45cm-tongues), and adopting a 8-month-old baby elephant. See Kenya post
- I know it’s too bland clichée, but I managed to get Malaria tropica in Kenya, gradually breaking out in waves from the first day at home and rising to the peak of over 40° C fever and four days in the tropical hospital in Würzburg.

yugop.com Update
added on Friday, Jun 02, 2006 18:51 pm
Speaking of yugop.com: The "Jam Pack" interaction is also top-notch. Falling 2D balls punch into each other with totally convincing physics. Aesthetically pleasing and -- this time this is not just marketing speak -- a real experience.

Uniqlo
added on Friday, Jun 02, 2006 18:40 pm
Yugo Nakamura -- one of the oldest names in the "Gosh-did-you-see-THIS-website?"-game -- created a teaser website for the new Uniqlo flagship store. Finest flash animation, great soundtrack. Animated logo patterns, self-running and cut into scenes similar to video-clips. But -- and that's what makes it so original -- this is combined with mouse interaction. In every scene, you can kick out the tiles out of the marching patterns. Very cool, nice effect when you figure it out.
What is this about tints?

Ok, so you have a website. It took months to get everything right, the colors, the layout, the typography. But even the most sophisticated web design will start to bore you after some time online. That is why on tint.de you can switch between different website designs, called "tints". ¬ Full Entry

I created this tint for May 1st Reboot 2006 and CSS Reboot Spring 2006. Its dark and snowy overall tone is reminiscant of the passed winter, but the subtle colors already give a hint of spring.
